The year before (1998) Gates was worth half that. Most of Gates’s wealth was in Microsoft stock and other securities, making him the richest person in the world for the 5th year in a row.
According to data gathered in April 1999, Forbes Global listed a total of 460 billionaires (in U.S. dollars) world-wide.
