Sugar cane in the New World

Ships of Christopher Columbus’s second voyage unloaded Sugar Cane in 1493, at what was to become the city of Santo Domingo, on the island of Hispaniola (now in the Dominican Republic). Then in 1515 a sugar mill was built on the island.
