First European explorer to land on the South American continent

Christopher Columbus, during his third voyage, became the first European explorer to land on the South American continent. Columbus was attempting to find a route south of Cuba to Cathay (China). But was sidetracked when he entered the Gulf of Paria and saw the South American mainland on August 1st 1498. Columbus planted the Spanish flag on the Paria Peninsula, in what is now Venezuela, on August 5th 1498.
