In what is now the state of Florida, USA, Odette Philippe, a French military surgeon, established a grapefruit plantation in 1809. Philippe was rather taken by the grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) when he was sampling them in the Bahamas, Philippe had been interned as a prisoner of war by the British.
