Frozen Desserts Enjoyed by Ancient Romans

Ancient Romans first enjoyed frozen desserts after mixing fruit juice with mountain snow provided by runners. A Chinese frozen dessert, sherbet made of fruit ice with a milk base was introduced by Marco Polo, Italy in 1295. Paris opened the first ice cream parlour in 1670 by Francisco Procopio, a Sicilian who sold fruit ices. Parisien cafe owner, Tortoni probably invented our modern flavour favorites: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream circa 1790. The first ice cream factory was built in Baltimore, Maryland in 1851 by Jacob Fussell, a milk dealer.
