First Printed Complete Gutenberg Bible Survives

The first printed book in Europe to survive in its complete form was the Gutenberg Bible, also known as the Mazarin Bible (first copy part of Cardinal Mazarin of France’s library). Johannes Gutenberg designed and printed the three-volume Latin work in 42-line columns, and set by six compositors in Gothic type, on his press at Mainz, Germany. Completed with assistance from Johann Fust and Peter Schafer, printed no later than 1456 as per the handwritten notation on a surviving copy.
