The Pinakes (Tiles) Library Catalogue Compiled

Callimachus of Cyrene a Greek poet compiled the library catalogue, the Pinakes (TIles) of the great library of Alexandria, Egypts content inventory and known as the first bibliographer. Ptolemy I Soter founded the library in 306 BCE, then Callimachus became the first librarian 20-25 years to oversee a collection containing more than 500,000 volumes of scrolls stored in bins and grouped by subject matter. Ceramic tiles or Pinakes were affixed to the bins providing bibliographical information for each scroll to include the following: name; birthplace, father; teachers; education background; author pseudonyms; biography; content summary; editor details; publications list; first line of the work; and scroll provenance.
