President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana

Kwame Nkrumah, founder of the Convention People’s Party was born in the Gold Coast, Africa on February 8, 1951. He was elected to Parliament from prison as a political dissident during Gold Coast’s first general election. Following Ghana’s formation as a nation in March 1957 Nkrumah became Prime Minister then named President following Ghana declaration as a republic in 1960. Nkrumah’s government was ousted during a 1966 military coup.
