Caliph Muawiyah I founded the Muslim Umayyad Dynasty in 661 in Damascus, Syria. The Umayyad caliphs established an Islamic empire across Europe, Africa, Central Asia, and India. The Abbasids replaced the Umayyad family in 750 yet their lineage continued in Spain until 1031.
