Founding of the Muslim Navy

Abd Allah ibn Sa’d ibn Abi Sarh, the governor of southern Egypt, founded the Muslim navy. Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, the governor of Damascus,Syria assisted the Muslim attack on the Byzantine Empire and captured the Mediterranean islands of Cyprus in 649 and Rhodes in 654. They first defeated a Byzantine fleet in 652 off Alexandria, Egypt, and inflicted a further damage in 655 off Anatolia’s Lycian coast during the Battle of Dhat al-Sawari. Muawiyah became Caliph and founder of the Umayyad dynasty of Muslim rulers.
