Arjun, the fifth Sikh guru compiled the Sikh sacred book Adi Granth or Granth Sahib in 1604. The book contained 6,000 hymns in the Punjabi and Hindi languages composed by Nanak, various Hinduism and Islamic poets and saints. In 1704, the Adi Granth was accorded the status of guru, in place of a human leader.
