First Sikh Martyr

Arjan, compiler of the Adi Granth and the builder of the Golden Temple at Amritsar, India was the first Sikh martyr. Upon Jahangir’s succession, head of the Mughal empire of India in 1606, he abandoned the Sikh tolerance policy and accused Arjan of aiding a rebel prince, teaching falsehoods, and things that were offensive to Islam. Arjan was tortured to death in Lahore, India on May 30, 1606.
