First Professional Female Ballerina

Mlle. Lafontaine was the first professional ballerina to appear in Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Le Triomphe de l’amour (The Triumph of Love) at the Paris Opera in 1681. She continued to dance at the Paris Opera for ten years in long skirt costumes. Previously female ballet roles were performed by young men.
