Wright Built First Military Aircraft

Wilbur and Orville Wright built the Wright military flyer of 1909 for the U.S. Army Signal Corps as an observation and signaling craft. The biplane powered by a 32-horsepower engine and twin pusher props required catapult launching system driven by a weight dropped from a tower as liftoff. The first public demonstration was given on July 27, 1909, at Fort Myer, VA, USA to American president, William Howard Taft and crowd of 10,000. The biplane was piloted by Orville Wright and lieutenant Frank Purdy Lahm was the first passenger for a total flight time of 1 hour 12 minutes 37.8 seconds.
