Emile-Hortensius-Charles Cros, French poet and inventor designed the paleophone or type of phonograph on April 30, 1877. Despite detailing his invention with the French Academy of Sciences, a practical working version was never constructed. Thomas Alva Edison and John Kreusi went on to create the phonograph or first recording device on December 7, 1877.
