The first airplane hijacking occurred en route from Macao, China, to Hong Kong during a Cathay Pacific Airways flight on June 16, 1948. Wongyu Man led Chinese bandits who posed as passengers on the flying boat, Miss Macao attempting to take over the flight and kidnapping passengers for ransom. During the flight, shots were fired making the plane crash with Wongyu Man as the sole survivor. He later boasted of the crime to an informer unaware the police taped the conversations.
