First Catholic Priest Ordained in Santo Domingo

Spanish-born Bartolome de Las Casas was the first Catholic priest ordained in the colony of Santo Domingo, Hispaniola in 1512 who was also a soldier, painter, and catechism teacher. Las Casas became a missionary and outspoken defender of Indians rights in the Dominicana in 1522, and bishop of Chiapas, Mexico from 1544 to 1547. He wrote a book about slavery in the New World upon his return to Spain in 1552, the Brevlsima relacion de la destruction de las Indias (A Brief Report on the Destruction of the Indies).
