First Transatlantic Jet Flight from Michigan to England

Colonel David Carl Schilling, U.S. 56th Fighter Group commanded the first transatlantic eastward jet flight of 16 Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars planes on July 20, 1948 from Mount Clemens, Ml, USA, to Odiham, England. They traveled a distance of 4,283 miles (6,891 kilometers) in 10 hours 40 minutes. Stops included: Goose Bay, Labrador; Bluie West Two, Greenland; Keflavik, Iceland; and Stornoway, in the Outer Hebrides, off Scotland.
