King Offa of Mercia called himself the Rex Anglorum (“King of the English”) during his reign of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, England from 757 to 796. He was crowned Rex Totii Britanniae (“King of all Britain”) on September 4, 925. King Offa was treated as an equal by the European Kings. Historians prefer to cite Aethelstan, ruler of the West Saxon kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia.
