Scottish philosopher Alexander Bain, father of psychology published Mind and Body: The Theories of Their Relation in 1873 described theories of voluntary and spontaneous behavior, compound and constructive mental association. Bain first observed behavior resulting repetition of pleasurable consequences tends versus non-repetitive behavior resulting in painful consequences.
