Greek Design Caryatid Columns

The Treasury of the Cnidians in Delphi, Greece was built circa 550 BCE with Greek design Caryatid columns. Caryatid is the generic term for any architectural support or column that is wholly or partly human in form. Such anthropomorphic supports are from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt architecture, yet best known in the Erechtheum, an Ionic temple on the Acropolis at Athens, Greece, built by the architect Mnesicles and completed in 405 BCE. The Erechtheum’s southern portico is supported by a series of female caryatids from Caryae, a village in Laconia in southern Greece. The women had to carry heavy loads as punishment for the town’s militia alliance.
