Very Large Array In New Mexico

The Very Large Array radio interferometer located near Socorro, NM, USA, consists of 27 parabolic radio receiver dishes, rail mounted in a Y-pattern with arms about 13 miles (21 kilometres) long. Each dish is 82 feet (25 meters) in diameter, to be aimed and moved along its rail from a central control room. Using interferometric principles, a computer integrates the individual signals recorded by each dish into one signal that appears to have been recorded by a single dish with a diameter of 17 miles (27 kilometers). The VLA is operated by the U.S. National Radio Astronomy Observatory and began operation in 1980.
