Bjarni Herjolffson, a Icelandic trader first sighted North America during his travels between Iceland and Greenland in 986 CE. According to the Groenlendinga saga Tale of the Greenlanders in the Flateyjarbok (Songbook), collection of Icelandic sagas and tales dating back to the 13th century Herjolffson’s ship was blown off course by a storm where his men found an unknown tree-covered land, that went uninvestigated. The tale inspired Leif Eriksson to undertake an exploration voyage years later.
