Canal du Midi First Built

Engineer Pierre Riquet constructed the Canal du Midi tunnel in France 1681 with a length of 515 feet (157 meters). This marked the first known use of explosives by blasting black powder charges inserted into holes drilled into the rock for a major tunnelling project.
