Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Guerrero was the first European to be accepted into the Mayan culture in Yucatan, Mexico in 1510. Guerrero taught the Mayans how to build European style fortifications to withstand gunpowder weapons, enabling them to resist Spanish efforts at conquest. He was killed by Spanish forces in Honduras in 1536.
