The Church Missionary Society, operating in Lagos, Nigeria developed Yoruba writing script in 1875. The Christian Bible was translated to Yoruba in 1900, along with the first book of poetry by J. Sobowole Sowande Iwe Ekini Sobo (Sobo’s First Book) in 1905. The first novel was Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo lrunmale (The Forest of a Thousand Demons) published in 1938, by the Chief Daniel Olorunfemi Fagunwa.
