Prime Minister Robert Gabriel Mugabe became Zimbabwe’s (formerly Rhodesia) first Executive President on December 31, 1987. Mugabe began his career as a Marxist nationalist guerrilla leader in the Rhodesian civil war, cofounder of the Patriotic Front of Zimbabwe Party, and winning a landslide victory during the 1980 elections. Mugabe served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987.
