Sojourner Roving Robot on Mars

The Sojourner robot was sent to explore Mars’ planet surface as per the Pathfinder mission launch from Cape Canaveral, FL, USA, on December 4, 1996 and landing on July 4, 1997 on the Ares Vallis, an ancient Martian floodplain. The Sojourner was a 25-pound (11-kilogram), six-wheeled robot designed to explore and analyze the surface of Mars at a cost of US$23 million. On July 6, Sojourner rolled away from Pathfinder to conduct an analysis of soil and rocks in the immediate area. The craft was renamed the Sagan Memorial Station, in honour of the late American astronomer Carl Sagan, and named for Sojourner Truth, the African-American abolitionist.
