First Intestinal Surgery Performed

Hindu surgeon Susruta first performed surgery to repair perforated or obstructed intestines in India in 49 BCE. Wound sutures were the severed heads of giant ants, exercising enough gripping pressure to hold the parts together. Susruta used steel instruments including 20 sharp instruments and 101 blunt ones.
