His single-piston design, which used coal gas fuel, was publicly displayed at the 1878 Paris Exposition. Otto did not invent the four-stroke cycle, it was patented in 1862 by the French engineer, Alphonse-Eugene Beau de Rochas. built a practical engine based on the patent.
