Founding of European Women’s Monastery

The women’s monastery at St. John’s was founded by Bishop Caesarius at Arles, France in 512. The first illuminated books copied and illustrated by women may have been created here as per Caesarius’ instructions: “Between psalms and fasts, vigils and reading, let the virgins of Christ copy holy books beautifully.”
