Forestry Treatise

John Evelyn a member of the Royal Society produced the study for the commissioners of the British Navy entitled importance was Sylva, or a Discourse of Forest trees, and the Propagation of Timber in 1664. The book contains detailed descriptions of England’s native trees, discourses on their cultivation and use, wise forest management for any nation dependent on wooden ships for commerce and protection. Sylva went through many editions well into the 19th century.
