Illustrations in Human Anatomy Treatise

Human anatomy treatise with illustrations was published in Basel, Switzerland, in 1543 De humani corporis fabrica (On the Human’s Bodily Works). Belgian-born physicians Andreas Vesalius and Jan Stephan van Calcarphysician had studied with the painter Titian in Venice who produced striking illustrations. Vesalius dissected a series of executed criminals while Calcar drew what Vesalius laid bare.
