In 552 CE, Japan experienced an epidemic, most likely Smallpox, a very contagious disease. Buddhist Teachers from Korea, are suspected to have brought the disease to Japan. During the 400 years between 700 to 1100 CE Japan had suffered 119 deadly epidemics, including Smallpox, Measles, Mumps, Dysentery and Influenza, just to name a few.
