John Bennet Lawes, an English Agronomist and founder of the artificial fertilizer industry, built the first agricultural research station on his Estate at Rothamsted, England. In 1843 Joseph Henry Gilbert a chemist and John Bennet Lawes, co-founded the Rothamsted Experimental Station, where they researched fertilizer and animal nutrition.
