In 1770-72, while employed by the Hudson’s Bay Company, Samuel Hearne, an English Canadian was sent on an exposition North to see if he could find a path to Asia. He left Fort Prince of Wales with an Indian guide and the guides eight wives on the 5000 mile round trip across the Northwest Territories, around July 1970 he had reached the mouth of Copper Mine River, which empties into the Arctic Ocean.
