Alpine Mountaineer Pioneered Ascents in the Swiss Alps

Alpine mountaineer, Horace-Benedict de Saussure made a series of pioneering ascents in the Swiss Alps beginning in 1760. As professor of physics and philosophy at the Academy of Geneva, Switzerland he published several volumes of Voyages dans les Alpes (Travels in the Alps) chronicling his travels between 1779 to 1796 and introduced the word ‘geology’ as scientific terminology.
