Coalbrookedale Bridge over the River Severn in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England was the first cast iron bridge. Designed by Thomas Pritchard, erected by John Wilkinson and Abraham Darby III which opened for traffic on January 1, 1781. The bridge’s five arch ribs were cast in two 70-foot (21-meter) halves to make a single semi-circular arch spanning 143 feet (44 meters). It was assembled entirely with cast dove-tailed joints, pegs, and keys and constructed without the use of nuts, bolts or screws.
