Sveinn Björnsson Elected First President of Iceland

Denmark Minister, Sveinn Björnsson, was elected the first President of Iceland upon Iceland’s Declaration of Independence from Denmark in 1944. Bjogisson was Iceland’s minister to Denmark during the 1920’s and 1930’s, then a regent for the Danish king during World War II. He was reelected President of Iceland in 1945 and 1949.
