First Roman Greenhouses

Roman greenhouses were covered with thin sheets of translucent stone and in use the first century CE. Roman poet Martial mentioned greenhouses with glass walls, yet the actual term was coined in the mid-17th century by the English writer John Evelyn. The first greenhouse building was erected in 1697 at Chatsworth, England, on the estate of the Duke of Devonshire.
