International Year of the World’s Indigenous People

The first International Year of the World’s Indigenous People was 1993.
The United Nations created it to draw attention to the rights of indigenous peoples to possess or repossess ancestral lands or receive compensation for them; the right to establish autonomous governments; and the right to international conflict arbitration between indigenous peoples and national governments.
