Sail Across-the-ocean race

Across-the-ocean race was held in 1866 from Sandy Hook, CT, USA, to Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, with the sponsorship of the New York Yacht Club.

Three schooners participated:

  • the Fleetwing,
  • the Vesta, and
  • the Henrietta,

All approximately 105 feet (32 meters) in length. The race was won in 13 days of sailing by the Henrietta and owned by James Gordon Bennett, founder and editor of the daily New York Herald.
